CITATION
RDA does not do conventions. He is not comfortable being the center of attention in a large room crowded with people. And so people are sad that they will never have a chance to meet him.
For years, his friend has been encouraging him to dip his toes in the convention waters, to just give it a try at a small intimate affair to see if he likes it. Finally, after many years of saying no, he decided that he wanted to find a way to thank the fans for their support over the years, and agreeing to a small convention might be a way to start. So he let himself be persuaded to try one.
This is not a matter of US vs UK, or "these fans" vs "those fans", or "rich" vs "poor" or "why only two SG-1 stars and not all four", or "how come it's not all about MacGyver." The convention is in England because the organizer, the friend he trusted and turned to to help him find a way to say thank you to the fans, is in England. It is expensive because of the kind of event it is and the enormous expenses that go into organizing something like this - keep in mind, the organizer is making *no* profit. And it is small because that was the way RDA felt comfortable to test the waters.
As soon as word leaked out that RDA would be making an appearance, a number of other convention organizers, including some for-profit groups, jumped on the bandwagon and thought that they would be able to grab RDA for their event too. As a result, several convention organizers have been advertising that RDA is expected to attend their event, and they are selling tickets on that basis - in other words, people are buying tickets under false pretenses.
THAT was what prompted RDA's statement through Legends Memorabilia. Just as with the fake autographs on eBay, RDA was angry that people were being ripped off and that his name was being used to do it. So to set the record straight, he made a statement to clear up the rumors, protect the fans, and make it clear that he has made no other plans for conventions beyond Avalon. Yet.
But he did NOT say that this was the only event he would ever do. Avalon was meant to be a small gentle way to nudge him into the realm of conventions, and to give him an opportunity to begin to thank the fans for their support. Right now he has not made any plans beyond Avalon. Logically he would want to see how this event goes first before venturing to another convention.
If Avalon is successful and comfortable he may very well be happy to try another one, and another. Wait until after November. See how it goes. Hope that RDA enjoys the experience. If so, he may very well consider doing more of them at other venues.
But please consider this: The alternative would have been for RDA to turn down the offer and choose to remain out of the public eye. Instead he showed a willingness to give it a try. How can that possibly be a bad thing?
Kate
